Making Sure Your Load is Secure

It is everyone’s responsibility in the Transport Chain to ensure the safety of the vehicle and its load. As an HGV driver you also have a personal responsibility to ensure that your load is secure – has been secured properly before departure and the same when unloading. You must ensure that you have fully read and understood the guidelines around the safe loading and security of your load. Drive Personnel has a wide variety of transport and haulage customers across general haulage, pallet network distribution, container transport, building products distribution and many other sectors across the Southampton, Eastleigh and wider Hampshire area and as a result you could be carrying a variety of loads and if in any doubt as to how the particular load should be secured you should seek immediate guidance from the operator you are working for.

There is also guidance produced by the DVSA and you should ensure that you are familiar with all aspects of this.  The items chosen by the DVSA are the ones that have given the greatest industry concern.  However, it is designed to complement and does not replace the more extensive guidance in the DFT’s code of practice and the European Best Practices Guidelines on Cargo Securing for Road Transport which also should be read and understood.
