As a Class 1 HGV driver, some of your responsibilities could include:

• Safely operating and driving an HGV Class 1 vehicle in compliance with traffic and road regulations.
• Carrying out pre and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure its safety and report any defects or issues.
• Load and unloading goods and ensure proper securing of the cargo to prevent damage during transportation.
• Maintaining accurate records of deliveries, including logbooks, fuel usage, and vehicle maintenance, and effectively communicate with dispatch and customers.

The qualifications and requirements for HGV Class 1 jobs typically include a valid driving license for HGV Class 1 vehicles, a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and a Digital Tachograph Card. Additionally, employers may require candidates to have a certain amount of experience driving HGV Class 1 vehicles, good physical fitness, and a clean driving record. Some companies may also require additional qualifications such as ADR (Dangerous Goods) certification or specific training for specialised equipment or cargo. 

To qualify for a Class 1 job, you will need to hold a valid LGV CAT C+E or Class 1 Licence. You will also need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and will need to be at least 18 years old.

There are a variety of HGV 1 jobs, from night driving and long haul trips, to day driving jobs.

The working hours of HGV Class 1 drivers can depend on the type of job. Some long-haul HGV1 jobs include overnight work, but HGV Class 1 drivers can also pick up day work with more social and family friendly hours.

Generally, individuals applying for HGV Class 1 jobs need to have a certain level of physical fitness and health to safely operate large commercial vehicles. This includes good eyesight, hearing, and coordination, as well as the ability to sit for long periods of time and handle heavy loads. Additionally, it is likely that drivers will be required to pass a medical examination to ensure they meet the necessary physical fitness standards.

HGV 1 drivers have the opportunity to advance their careers by completing additional training for more specialist vehicles and loads. Some of these opportunities include moffett/crane, ADR, HIAB or Airside qualifications, which can offer access to a wider range of HGV driving jobs.
