4 Safety Tips for HGV Drivers

The road haulage industry can be subject to so much danger. To ensure maximum safety on the roads, HGV drivers should undertake the following 4 safety checks.

1. Ensure you are ready to drive

Much of safe driving is about being healthy and fit to drive. Whether you are self-employed or employed by a company, you should ensure that you are always fit to drive before starting a shift. Ensure you can:

· Hear and see clearly

Understand all types of information right away
· Act decisively and quickly

If you have any ongoing illness like diabetes, ensure you always have your medication, the right foods as well as your blood glucose meter to help keep your blood sugar levels low.

2. Follow the driving hours limit

HGV drivers should take rest periods or breaks to give them time to recuperate which will in turn reduce the chances of an accident happening. During their break, the driver should not carry out any type of driving or any other work.

According to the traffic authority, each driver must take a 45 minutes breaks after driving for 4.5 hours. Two breaks lasting 30 minutes and 15 minutes are also acceptable.

· The daily driving limit is 9 hours but can be extended to 10 hours twice a week

· The weekly driving limit is 56 hours and 90 hours for a two weeks. However, daily and weekly rest should always be taken.

Although transport managers and the traffic authority are always on their toes to ensure HGV drivers take breaks, it is up to a driver to stick to the driving hours limits for their own safety.

3. Ensure the vehicle is roadworthy

Having the vehicle checked is a great way to ensure safety while on the road. Before you begin any trip, ensure you have checked the battery’s condition, coupling security, indicators, lights, body, markers, suppression, leaks, brakes, mirrors, warning lamps and the condition of parts outside of the vehicle.

All parts of the vehicle should be in perfect working condition before you begin the trip.

4. Assess the driving conditions

Weather conditions play a big role in ensuring driving safety, therefore, ensure you are well prepared for the snow, heavy rains or for hot temperatures. This may include making certain physical changes to the vehicle or even changing your driving style and mentality.

Also, assess the condition of the route you will take so that you are prepared for any problems that you may face. Though accidents are unpredictable, avoiding busy areas or those with road works will reduce the chances of an accident occurring.
